Matilo (Leiden, The Netherlands)
In May the first part of the ArcLand workshop was held in Leiden. The first week was used for refreshing our measuring skills. The second week we worked at a DEM of a Roman fortress with a double-ditched rampart.
The camp site had been partly excavated and - at the time of our workshop - a reconstruction was built at the exact spot. A perfect place for exercises!
In the photo gallery below you get an impression of the sheer size of the site. And of the Dutch weather conditions in May.

The Total Challenge
Every year, as final proof of their abilities, the students have to complete the Total Challenge without any help from the staff. Usually it is a near impossible task for which thay have too little time. And this year was no exception: the problem was to measure the outline of the Motte and the inside well of "De Burg" in Leiden. Then return to the point that they started from with as little error as possible. Difficult because the terrain is very steep.
Ostia Antica
The first half of our fieldwork was done in Ostia Antica, Italy. A very beautiful site.
